The vast majority of the time a tooth that has been treated with a root canal will function comfortably for the rest of your life. Unfortunately the human body is very complex and approximately 5% of even perfectly done root canals can become re-infected. This does not mean the tooth has to be lost. There are options to save the tooth! One option is to complete a root canal re-treatment. This is very similar to the original root canal. The original root canal material is removed, the tooth disinfected and new filling material placed. Many times this second round of disinfection is all that is needed to return the tooth to health and comfortable function.
Occasionally an infected tooth requires Endodontic Micro-Surgery. We know that the word “surgery” often scares people. Endodontic Micro-Surgery is a common in office procedure that often is faster than the original root canal. Most commonly this procedure is accomplished with local anesthetic alone, but Nitrous Oxide and oral sedation are available.
The following video further describes Endodontic Micro-Surgery. Feel free to contact our office with any questions about this safe, comfortable and predictable procedure.
